Over 40 vendors and more than 225 total attendees descended on the mile high city of Denver, Colorado, June 14-17, for USIndoor’s Seventh Annual Facility Operators’ Conference & Trade Show. Meeting in the heart of Downtown Denver at the landmark Adam’s Mark Hotel, experienced operators, startups and vendors alike called the event the Association’s most successful yet—mixing education, networking and fun for all.
Certified Arena Operator Class
The Conference kicked off Wednesday, June 13, with the Certified Arena Operator Class, new for 2007. Offered exclusively by USIndoor, the Certified Arena Operator Program is the industry’s only professional certification for those serious about running an indoor sports facility. Attended by over 40 participants, the class was led by industry experts, including Program Director, Jim Cline. Said Cline, "A lot of people worked very hard to ensure that the CAO Program achieved top ratings—even in its first year—and I believe it surpassed all of our expectations. I expect that the CAO credential will become a prerequisite for all managers as the recreational sports industry becomes more and more sophisticated and diverse."
Participation in the two-day class allowed attendees to gain measurable skills and knowledge essential to performing many of the complex functions of a general manager. To complete the course and earn their CAO credential, attendees had to pass a take-home exam and will maintain their certification through course offerings throughout the year via webcasts and teleseminars.
Facility Bus Tour
A perennial favorite, the Conference’s annual Facility Bus Tour again sold out and did not disappoint. Held on Thursday, June 14, the first official day of the Conference, the Tour visited five diverse facilities across the Denver area: North Jeffco Parks and Recreation Facility (Arvada), Arapahoe Sports Center (Englewood), Family Sports Center (Englewood), Parker Fieldhouse (Parker), and the newly opened Dick's Sporting Goods Park (Commerce City), home to Denver's professional outdoor soccer team, the Colorado Rapids. There, attendees enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch, including remarks by Hall of Famer and Rapids Head Coach Fernando Clavijo. Clavijo first made his name in indoor soccer during the 1980s with the New York Arrows and San Diego Sockers before joining the US National Team in 1990. Clavijo entertained the crowd with his many anecdotes, graciously answered questions and posed for pictures. After lunch, the group was treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the gleaming facility.
All in all, the Tour provided attendees a great many ideas to take back to their own facilities. As Brandon Benedict, Recreation Specialist for Foothills Park and Recreation District, commented, “The Bus Tour was extremely helpful, especially since we are only a year and a half old. We have a full-sized indoor field. That is a lot different compared to the other 99% of the attendees. I was able to see other facilities in the Metro Area and see what they were doing and how they are programmed.”
Veteran’s Operators Symposium
Friday began with the invitation-only Veteran Operators Symposium, as well as a Referee Certification class, and ended with the opening of the Trade Show and a cocktail reception. Back by popular demand, the invitation-only Symposium, led by USIndoor president Don Shapero, provided experienced operators the opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss advanced topics in a private, intimate, interactive setting.

Opening General Session
Friday afternoon’s General Session featured a keynote address by Marty Mankameyer, a 30-year career soccer veteran. Mankameyer shared her experiences from serving as president of the US Olympic Committee as well as from her 30 years in soccer, including traveling the world and weaving through the politics of the 1980s and 90s. She reached her ultimate achievement in 1991 when the US Women’s Team participated and won the first ever FIFA World Cup for women and then hosted and won the Cup again in 1999.

Trade Show
Friday ended on a high note with the opening of the 2007 President’s Reception and Trade Show. The Exhibit Hall quickly filled with attendees visiting nearly 40 vendors, gathering information and exchanging ideas and business cards. Throughout the two days of the Trade Show, there was a positive buzz from both vendors and attendees alike, as many current operators and startups got an up-close look at the latest technology and innovations to help take their facilities to the next level of profitability. Vendors from every aspect of the indoor facility industry were represented: from turf and board providers, to netting and roofing, scoreboards, software and insurance. Vendors of soccer programs also provided fresh ideas for attendees to take back to their home facilities. Remarked Lil’ Kickers representative Gene Hogan, “The Trade Show portion of the Conference was very beneficial. The layout of the booths made it easy for people to visit and move from booth to booth. In addition, having tables available was great to sit down and visit with people and to take a break!” Cocktails and scrumptious hors de’oeuvres capped off a successful and informative opening day.
RubySpeaks
Saturday’s sessions began with a much-anticipated General Session featuring an Award Ceremony honoring 5-year members and keynote speaker Ruby Newell-Legner, founder of RubySpeaks, Inc. Mrs. Newell-Legner, one of the most sought after customer service experts in the country, has worked with powerhouse organizations, such as Dolphins Stadium and the Pittsburgh Steelers Guest Relations Staff, and was most recently chosen to train the customer relations staff for the 2008 Olympics. Newell-Legner invigorated attendees with anecdotes of Dubai and practical solutions for better connecting with customers back home. “Ruby’s program was like a shot of espresso that completely rejuvenated my spirit,” said Nicole Hayashi, Youth Program Director, Vetta Sports Clubs, St. Peters, MO. “She made it easy to follow and broke it down so that everyone is reached by her message.”
Newell-Legner, who stayed busy after her keynote with a follow-up session for existing operators and with book signings, also expressed a tremendous appreciation for the value of the Conference. “USIndoor attendees all have the same thing in common… their desire to grow and improve their business. The 2007 Conference was certainly the place to learn new business strategies to take your facility and programs to the next level.”
Core Programming for Start Ups & Existing Operators The core programming of the Conference consisted of two tracks of educational sessions designed for existing operators and for startups. Friday’s Existing Operator Track kicked off with a panel discussion on how to maximize sponsorship revenue. The Startup Track offered an industry overview and summary of upcoming sessions during the duration of the Conference. Over the next two days through Sunday morning, topics for existing operators included: the true cost of managing employees, raising the bar on customer relations, alternate revenue streams, and roundtable discussions featuring “hot topics” for both new and more seasoned existing operators. Startup topics included: questions to ask before opening a sports facility, the importance of a feasibility study, establishing a business model, financing, and risk management.
Coors Field and Whitewater Rafting
A memorable Saturday concluded with a trip to Coors Field to take in a Rockies-Devil Rays Major League Baseball game. Approximately seventy attendees enjoyed a marvelous buffet and drinks at the stadium’s Mountain Ranch Club, overlooking the field and having the Rocky Mountains as a dramatic backdrop. It was a tremendous opportunity to get to know attendees from all parts of the country in a relaxed, informal setting.
Twenty attendees remained on hand to participate in Sunday afternoon’s whitewater rafting trip at Clear Creek, about 1 ½ hours due west of Downtown Denver. “What a great way to end a fantastic Conference experience in Denver!” said one drenched and exhilarated rafter. “I feel utterly cleansed.”
Comments from Feedback Forms Response from attendees was overwhelmingly positive regarding the Conference’s timing, its location, choice of hotel, schedule of events, moderators, format, affordability and Trade Show. The most popular optional activities were Saturday evening’s baseball game, Thursday’s Facility Bus Tour, and the Certified Arena Operator Class. Recommendations from existing operators called for more small and informal roundtable sessions (limited to ten participants) to encourage more depth, disclosure and familiarity among attendees. Others voiced a desire to begin Friday’s general programming in the early morning, rather than the afternoon, and to conclude the Conference Saturday night, rather than Sunday. Regarding session topics, prospective startups were extremely positive. Experienced operators, especially returning attendees, suggested offering sessions on more specific programming areas (like birthday parties and camps, as opposed to the more general “Alternate Revenue Streams”), so as to have more advanced, detailed discussion. All this, however, most considered “fine-tuning,” as all attendees submitting feedback indicated they would attend another USIndoor Conference, citing the significant value of the networking and learning opportunities.

Looking Back and Ahead:
Since USIndoor’s initiating programming in late 1999, USIndoor Members can be very proud of our industry achievements:
- Facility membership comprises well over half the indoor soccer industry and continues to climb.
- Cost-saving programs, particularly in Insurance (The Monument Sports Group), have been widely successful. Other affinity programs introduced just within the past year provide benefits in: Human Resources (O2HR), Utilities Management (Affiliated Power Purchasers International) and Office Supplies (Office DEPOT).
- With two new hires in the past year and a more active Advisory Board, USIndoor is better positioned to serve its members needs through educational programming (like its Certified Operator Program and Teleconference Series), enhancements to its Annual Facility Operators Conference, and general communications (USIndoor.com, facility e-newsletter, referee e-newsletter, etc.)
- GOAL Indoor (USIndoor’s national magazine) enjoys nationwide popularity and continues to expand its circulation, bringing increased recognition and appeal to the sport of indoor soccer.
- The Official Rules of Indoor Soccer, becoming more and more the accepted standard, is in its second printing and represents the core curriculum of USIndoor-certified referees.
- A specialized Referee Training Program, which continues to broaden its outreach, further supports the quality and integrity of the game and includes medical and liability insurance for certified officials.
- USIndoor’s alliance with Zoom Media Corp., representing several million dollars of 3rd-party investment in back-lit advertising boards and installations in about 75 member facilities as of this writing, positions members even more positively to attract local and national advertisers using signage and sampling.
- Seven successful national conferences (2001-2007) have demonstrated an ability to grow, as well as USIndoor’s eagerness to respond to the needs of its members and the marketplace.
USIndoor’s goals for the remainder of 2007 and into 2008 are to ensure the successful launches of the CAO Program’s Teleconference Series and new Corporate Members, O2HR and Office DEPOT; to build on existing programs, such as the National Conference and CAO and Referee Certifications; to develop a national marketing presence; to widen membership to more multi-sport venues; and to continue to explore opportunities to enhance member value. For members wishing to become more involved, volunteers are desired on committees established to explore the possibility of a USIndoor national tournament, to help design an individual membership program, and to provide input toward an online password-protected facility members’ area within USIndoor.com. Additionally, plans are underway for USIndoor’s 2008 Conference sometime in June, likely near or within the United States’ Eastern Seaboard. You may expect an announcement this summer!
USIndoor remains dedicated to serving its members’ best interests. Thank you for your commitment to all that USIndoor represents and for your involvement and support where possible.
